How to Prepare Your Home for Holiday Guests
The holidays are all about spending time with the people you love—but if those people are staying overnight, there can be a little extra pressure to get your home ready.
The good news? You don’t need a picture-perfect guest room or a hotel-worthy setup to make visitors feel comfortable. A few thoughtful touches can go a long way.
The easiest rule to follow is simple: Think about what you’d appreciate when staying in someone else’s home.
Whether you’re hosting family for several days or welcoming friends for a quick overnight stay, here are some easy ways to prepare your home for holiday guests.
Clear the Clutter Before Guests Arrive
You don’t need to deep-clean every closet in the house. Focus on the spaces your guests will actually use.
Tidy the entryway, living room, kitchen, guest room and bathroom, and remove unnecessary clutter from counters and other surfaces.
Pay special attention to walkways. Holiday decorations, extra furniture, packages and everyone’s luggage can quickly make a normally comfortable room feel crowded.
And yes, you’re absolutely allowed to have a “deal with this after the holidays” basket tucked away somewhere. We won’t tell.
Give Guests Space to Unpack
Living out of a suitcase gets old surprisingly fast.
If your guests have a dedicated bedroom, clear a little space in the closet and provide several empty hangers. If there’s a dresser, leave a drawer or two available for their belongings.
Don’t have much storage space? A luggage rack, bench or sturdy chair can at least give guests somewhere to place their suitcase instead of leaving it on the floor.
It’s a small detail that makes a guest room feel much more welcoming.
Stock the Bathroom With the Basics
Even the most organized traveler occasionally forgets a toothbrush.
Place a set of clean towels where guests can easily find them and consider putting together a small basket of commonly forgotten toiletries.
Think toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap and lotion. You don’t need to stock an entire hotel bathroom—a few basics are plenty.
If guests will be sharing your main bathroom, make sure they know where to find extra towels, toilet paper and anything else they might need.
Make the Guest Room Comfortable
Start with freshly washed bedding and then think about the little things that make bedtime easier.
Provide extra pillows and blankets so guests can adjust things to their comfort level. A nightstand or small table next to the bed gives them somewhere to put glasses, a phone or a bottle of water.
Then comes one of the most important modern hosting necessities: a place to charge everything.
Make sure guests have convenient access to an electrical outlet. A properly rated power strip or charging station can be useful when outlets are limited; avoid running extension cords through walkways or creating tripping hazards.
And save everyone the inevitable question by leaving your Wi-Fi network name and guest password somewhere easy to find.
Stock a Few Snacks and Drinks
One of the nicest things you can do for overnight guests is make them feel comfortable helping themselves.
Keep a few easy snacks, beverages and breakfast options available, and show your guests where everything is when they arrive.
You might set up a small coffee and tea station with mugs, sweeteners and other essentials so early risers don’t have to rummage through your cabinets while you’re still asleep.
If you know your guests have dietary preferences or restrictions, ask about them before shopping.
Add a Few Welcoming Touches
This is where you can have a little fun.
A small vase of flowers, bedside water, a few magazines or books, or a basket with extra blankets can make an ordinary room feel intentionally prepared.
You could even leave a handwritten welcome note if you’re feeling festive.
None of these things needs to be expensive. The point is simply to let your guests know you were thinking about them before they arrived.
Don’t Forget About Temperature
You may love sleeping in a chilly room while your mother-in-law arrives prepared for the tropics.
Since everyone has different preferences, show guests how to adjust the temperature if appropriate or provide a fan and extra blankets.
It’s much easier than having someone spend three nights quietly freezing because they didn’t want to bother you.
Keep It Simple and Enjoy the Holidays
Here’s the part that’s easy to forget: your guests are coming to see you, not inspect your house.
You don’t need a complete home makeover before the doorbell rings.
Give them a clean place to sleep, fresh towels, room for their belongings, easy access to food and drinks and a few thoughtful comforts. Then stop worrying about the house and enjoy having everyone together.
After all, that’s the part of holiday hosting people are actually going to remember.
Is Your Home Ready for the Next Chapter?
Hosting overnight guests can have a funny way of making you notice what works—and what doesn’t—about your current home.
Maybe you’re dreaming about an extra bedroom, a larger kitchen for holiday dinners or more space for everyone to gather.
If a different home is on your wish list, I’d be happy to help you explore your options throughout San Jose and the surrounding Silicon Valley area.
