Parks in and Around Japantown San Jose: A Local Guide
One of the things I enjoy about Japantown is how centrally located it is. In addition to the restaurants, local businesses, cultural destinations and neighborhood streets, there are several parks and outdoor spaces either within Japantown or just a short distance away.
Whether you’re looking for a playground, a place to walk, open green space, sports courts or somewhere to enjoy a picnic, there are plenty of options to explore.
I’ve visited many of these parks myself over the years, so I put together this guide to some of the parks in and around Japantown San Jose, along with a few Downtown San Jose destinations worth knowing about.
Raymond Bernal Jr. Memorial Park
7th Street & Hedding Street, San Jose, CA 95112
Raymond Bernal Jr. Memorial Park is one of the neighborhood parks closest to Japantown.
The 5.8-acre park includes an unlighted softball field, playgrounds for different age groups, restrooms, BBQ facilities and first-come, first-served picnic areas. The park is currently open from sunrise until one hour after sunset.
It’s a convenient neighborhood option when you’re looking for some outdoor space without going far from Japantown.
Backesto Park
551 N. 13th Street, San Jose, CA 95112
Backesto Park is another established green space near Japantown.
With its open lawns and recreational amenities, it’s a familiar neighborhood destination for outdoor activities and a good park to know if you’re exploring the greater Japantown area.
Guadalupe River Park & Gardens
Near Coleman Avenue and the Guadalupe River, San Jose
For something completely different, head west toward Guadalupe River Park & Gardens.
Rather than being a traditional neighborhood park, this is a roughly three-mile greenway running along the Guadalupe River through central San Jose. Visitors can walk, run or bike along approximately 2.6 miles of trails and explore several attractions throughout the park and gardens.
It’s also home to several destinations that deserve their own stop.
San José Heritage Rose Garden
The Heritage Rose Garden is part of Guadalupe Gardens and is one of San Jose’s more unusual outdoor attractions.
The garden contains more than 3,000 varieties and 4,000 planted roses, which the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy describes as the largest public collection of roses in the Western Hemisphere. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset and admission is free.
If you’ve never visited, it’s worth adding to your San Jose outdoor list—especially when the roses are putting on a show.
Rotary PlayGarden
438 Coleman Avenue, San Jose, CA 95110
The Rotary PlayGarden is another destination within Guadalupe River Park & Gardens.
Opened in 2015 and expanded in 2023, it was created as San Jose’s first all-inclusive play space, with accessible play structures designed for people of varying abilities.
Current hours and closures can change, so check the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy before visiting.
Guadalupe River Park Conservancy
Ryland Park
First Street & Fox Avenue, San Jose
Ryland Park sits between the Japantown and Downtown areas and is another convenient urban green space.
Its location makes it an easy park to discover while exploring central San Jose rather than having to make a separate trip across town.
St. James Park
North 2nd Street, Downtown San Jose
A little farther south toward Downtown is historic St. James Park.
This is another destination I’d keep in the article, but I’d clearly identify it as a Downtown San Jose park near Japantown, rather than suggesting it’s actually within Japantown.
That distinction makes the guide much more useful for someone unfamiliar with the area.
Plaza de César Chávez
194 S. Market Street, San Jose, CA 95113
Plaza de César Chávez is firmly in Downtown San Jose, but it’s close enough to include as an additional destination for someone exploring the broader central San Jose area.
The City of San José currently identifies it as a 2.3-acre urban park on South Market Street.
It’s also surrounded by many of Downtown San Jose’s museums, restaurants, entertainment venues and cultural attractions.
More Parks and Outdoor Spaces to Explore
The original version of this guide also included places such as John P. McEnery Park, Lenzen Park and Luna Park.
I’d keep the focus of the updated article tighter, though. Rather than trying to create the longest possible list, I’d concentrate on parks and outdoor destinations that are particularly useful when you’re exploring Japantown and central San Jose.
That makes this a neighborhood guide instead of just a directory.
Exploring Japantown San Jose
Parks are just one part of getting to know Japantown.
Spend some time walking through the neighborhood, exploring its restaurants and businesses, learning about its history and visiting the surrounding parks and Downtown destinations. You’ll get a much better sense of the area than you can from simply looking at homes online.
