741 N 19th Street: A Northside San Jose Home Tour

741 N 19th Street: A Northside San Jose Home Tour

What does move-in-ready living look like in San Jose’s Northside?

Let’s take a look inside 741 N 19th Street, San Jose, CA 95112, a renovated single-family home I had the opportunity to tour in San Jose’s Northside area.

The property has since sold, but it’s still a great example of what buyers may encounter when looking for an updated home near Downtown San Jose and Japantown.

And for buyers, there’s another reason home tours like this are valuable:

The more homes you see, the better you become at recognizing what you’re willing to pay for—and which upgrades actually matter to you.

Inside 741 N 19th Street in San Jose

741 N 19th Street is a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom single-family home with approximately 1,803 square feet of living space on a roughly 7,436-square-foot lot. The home was built in 1999 and includes a detached two-car garage.

The property was renovated extensively before its 2025 sale, combining updated interiors with features designed for everyday use.

An Open, Light-Filled Living Space

One of the first things you’ll notice in the home tour is the open feeling of the main living area.

A bay window brings natural light into the living room, while a fireplace creates a focal point for the space.

There’s also a separate dining area, giving the home some definition without making the main living spaces feel disconnected.

An Updated Kitchen With a Built-In Dining Nook

The kitchen was one of my favorite parts of this home.

It included white shaker-style cabinetry, updated appliances and a built-in banquette that created a casual dining area directly in the kitchen.

Built-in features like this are worth paying attention to when you’re touring homes.

They can add functionality without requiring additional furniture, particularly when they’re thoughtfully incorporated into the existing floor plan.

A Primary Suite With Backyard Access

The primary bedroom included decorative details such as wainscoting and crown molding, along with an attached bathroom featuring dual sinks, a walk-in shower and towel warmer.

The primary suite also provided access to the covered back patio and yard.

Again, these are the kinds of details that can be difficult to appreciate from listing photos alone.

That’s one reason I encourage buyers to pay attention not only to finishes but also to how the home actually flows when you’re standing inside it.

Outdoor Space and Additional Features

The property also offered a covered patio, hot tub, artificial turf and additional outdoor seating space.

The detached garage included an EV charger, and listing information noted a storage area behind the garage that could potentially provide additional flexible space, subject to a buyer independently verifying permitted uses and suitability.

For buyers, spaces like these can be interesting—but it’s important not to automatically assume a bonus area is legally permitted as a bedroom, office, living space or ADU.

That’s something to investigate during your due diligence.

What Did 741 N 19th Street Sell For?

The home was listed in January 2025 at $1,598,888 and sold on March 7, 2025 for $1,640,000.

That’s about $41,112 above its asking price, or roughly 2.6% over list.

But I wouldn’t use one sale to conclude that every Northside San Jose property should sell over asking.

The eventual price of an individual home can be influenced by its condition, location, improvements, competing inventory, buyer demand, pricing strategy and other factors.

That’s why comparable sales matter when you’re preparing an offer.

What Buyers Can Learn From This San Jose Home Tour

There’s an important lesson here beyond the finishes.

When you’re looking at homes in San Jose, try not to evaluate every property based solely on whether you personally like the countertops or paint colors.

Look at the things that may be harder—or more expensive—to change.

Consider the:

  • Floor plan
  • Natural light
  • Lot
  • Indoor-outdoor connection
  • Storage
  • Parking
  • Major systems
  • Quality of renovations
  • Property disclosures
  • Permits for significant improvements
  • Recent comparable sales

Cosmetic changes can often be made later.

Understanding the home’s fundamentals can help you make a more informed decision about whether the property works for you.

Buying an Updated Home? Look Beyond the Pretty Finishes

A beautifully renovated home can certainly be appealing.

But “renovated” doesn’t automatically mean every improvement was completed recently, permitted where required or performed to the standard you expect.

Before buying, review the seller’s disclosures and available property documentation carefully.

Depending on the property and your circumstances, you may also want appropriate inspections and additional professional advice.

A gorgeous kitchen is great. Knowing what you’re buying is even better.
