Eichler’s, Spanish Revival, and Victorian bungalows: a guide to Willow Glen architecture
A guide to Willow Glen architecture. Many San Jose neighborhoods were built in the 1970’s and 1980s, but Willow Glen homes are older
Drive 10 minutes in any directions San Jose, you'll likely track homes from the 1970s and 80s, ranch houses, but drive down Lincoln Avenue when you're driving through a time capsule. Willow Glen is one of the few neighborhoods in The Silicon Valley where you can find a 1920s craftsman, a 1930s Spanish revival, and a 1960s mid-century modern masterpiece all in the same ZIP Code!
I’m here to help you understand the architecture of one of San Jose’s most beloved neighborhoods, Willow Glen!
To understand the architecture, you need to understand the micro neighborhoods in Willow Glen.
The oldest sections of Willow Glen are on the north side. On the North Side, you will find the micro neighborhood of Palm Haven marked by the majestic Mexican Fan Palms that line the area. In Palm Haven Willow Glen, and all across the north side, you will find Parrrie, Craftsman, and Spanish revival style homes marked by the classic Spanish tile roofs.
Craftsman-style homes are a style seen all across Willow Glen, and it is very common to see new homes built that are craftsman-inspired!
The Eichler is another prevalent style in Willow Glen, but it is mostly found in the micro neighborhood we lovingly call Eichler land! The Eichler, named for its architect Joseph Eichler, is a much beloved style among tech workers who see Joseph Eichler as a visionary who solved a problem, invented a new style, and developed new technology along the way. The Eichler story fits perfectly in Silicon Valley, with the goals of ingenuity, style, and function that the Eichler represents, which are a reflection of those goals. Eichler was tasked with creating a family home that could be built in mass on a small lot within a constrained budget. Eichler did not make a functional structure he invented a revolutionary style, whose open floor plan with large windows that seam impossible forward thinking and ahead of its time. While other builders were building traditional-style homes with separate rooms, Eichler was able to leave an enduring mark on Silicon Valley!
