🏛️ The “Secret” History: When Willow Glen Was Its Own City
Did you know Willow Glen fought to stay independent from San Jose?
If you’ve ever felt that Willow Glen feels like a “town within a city,” you aren’t imagining it. For nine years, it actually was its own city. While today we know it as San Jose’s most charming neighborhood, Willow Glen’s history is defined by a fierce independent streak—and a dramatic battle against a railroad giant that almost changed Lincoln Avenue forever.
The City of Willow Glen (1927–1936)
In the 1920s, the Southern Pacific Railroad proposed routing a major trunk line straight down Lincoln Avenue. Imagine freight trains rumbling through what is now your favorite spot for outdoor dining!
The residents weren’t having it. To stop the railroad, the community voted to incorporate as the independent “City of Willow Glen” in 1927. The strategy worked: the city government successfully blocked the tracks, forcing the railroad to reroute to the northern edge of the neighborhood (where the Caltrain tracks sit today).
The “Sewer System” Surrender
If Willow Glen won the war against the railroad, why is it part of San Jose today? In a word: plumbing. Willow Glen was built on former marshland, which meant the soil didn’t drain well. By the mid-1930s, the independent city was facing a sewage crisis and couldn’t afford to build its own treatment plant. In 1936, residents made the tough choice to be annexed by San Jose to gain access to the municipal sewer system. Even then, the independent spirit ran deep—the vote to join San Jose passed by a slim margin of just 978 to 871.
A Legacy of Independence
That nine-year period of independence left a permanent mark on the community’s DNA.
- Founders’ Day: The neighborhood’s annual celebration in September specifically commemorates the years it was an independent city (1927–1936).
- The Christmas Trees: The tradition of placing small Christmas trees in front yards, which started in 1950, is a unique neighborhood-wide custom that sets it apart from the rest of San Jose.
- The “Willow Glen” Address: To this day, many residents (and even maps) will casually use “Willow Glen, CA” as if it were still a separate town.
