Backesto Park

Located just a few blocks from Japantown in the Northside neighborhood, this 12-acre park has been a community gathering place for more than a century.
There’s something here for everyone—playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, bocce courts, softball fields, picnic areas, and plenty of open green space to spread out.
One of the park’s most charming features is its beautiful mosaic fountain, which has been welcoming visitors since the 1920s. Throughout the year, the park also hosts community events, including the popular Luna Park Chalk Art Festival, where artists transform the sidewalks into colorful works of art.
Whether you’re meeting friends for a picnic or letting the kids burn off some energy, Backesto Park is one of those places that makes the neighborhood feel like home.
Guadalupe River Park & Trail
For walkers, runners, and cyclists, the Guadalupe River Trail is one of the biggest perks of living near Japantown.
The paved trail follows the Guadalupe River through downtown San Jose, offering miles of scenic pathways lined with trees and open space.
It’s a favorite route for morning jogs, afternoon bike rides, or simply getting around the city without needing to hop in the car.
St. James Park
Just a short walk or bike ride from Japantown, St. James Park offers a peaceful break from the energy of downtown.

While you’re there, you can also visit Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, making it an easy day trip if you have kids.
Alum Rock Park
If you’re looking for more of a nature escape, Alum Rock Park is well worth the drive.
About 15 minutes from Japantown, it’s one of California’s oldest municipal parks and offers miles of hiking, biking, and horseback riding trails through beautiful canyons and wooded hillsides.
Several overlooks provide sweeping views of the surrounding valley, making it a favorite weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
