A Parent’s Guide to Schools in Almaden Valley

If you’re searching for a home in Almaden Valley, chances are schools are high on your priority list.

In fact, it’s one of the biggest reasons so many families choose this neighborhood. Almaden Valley has earned a reputation for excellent public schools, beautiful parks, and a strong sense of community—making it one of the most sought-after places to raise a family in San Jose.

That said, choosing a home based on schools isn’t always as straightforward as it seems.

Here’s what families should know before they start house hunting.

Not Every Home Is Assigned to the Same Schools

One of the biggest surprises for buyers is that Almaden Valley isn’t served by just one school district.

Most homes are part of San Jose Unified School District (SJUSD), but some neighborhoods fall within Union Elementary School District before transitioning to Campbell Union High School District. There are also a few smaller areas with different attendance boundaries.

The important takeaway?

Never assume a home’s school assignment based on the neighborhood alone.

Before making an offer, it’s always worth verifying the assigned schools for the specific address you’re considering. School boundaries can be surprisingly detailed, and they can change over time.

Elementary Schools

One of the things I love about Almaden Valley is that there really aren’t many weak spots when it comes to elementary schools.

Several schools consistently receive high marks from families, including:

  • Williams Elementary, a National Blue Ribbon School that’s well known for its strong academic reputation.
  • Graystone Elementary, another favorite among local families.
  • Los Alamitos Elementary, which consistently earns positive reviews.
  • Simonds Elementary and Almaden Elementary, both serving different parts of the neighborhood with strong community support.
  • Guadalupe Elementary, another well-regarded option within the area.

The good news is that families have several excellent choices, depending on where they live.

Middle Schools

Most Almaden Valley students attend one of these middle schools:

  • Bret Harte Middle School, which is often considered one of the area’s most sought-after middle schools.
  • Castillero Middle School, another well-respected option serving many Almaden neighborhoods.
  • Students living in the Union Elementary District typically continue to Dartmouth Middle School, which also has a strong reputation.

High Schools

For high school, most students attend either:

  • Leland High School, known for its challenging academics, Advanced Placement courses, athletics, and performing arts programs.
  • Pioneer High School, which offers a strong academic program and a close-knit school community.

Which high school your child attends depends on the specific neighborhood, so it’s another reason to double-check school boundaries before purchasing a home.

Private School Options

Families looking at private education also have several nearby choices.

Some of the best-known schools include Almaden Country Day School, Challenger School – Almaden, and Holy Spirit School, along with other private and faith-based schools throughout San Jose.

Don’t Focus Only on Rankings

It’s easy to get caught up comparing school ratings online.

While test scores can be helpful, they’re only one piece of the picture.

Things like school culture, extracurricular programs, class size, commute, and how well a school fits your child’s learning style can be just as important.

Fortunately, Almaden Valley offers a number of highly regarded schools, so many families find themselves choosing between several great options rather than searching for just one “best” school.

Buying a Home With Schools in Mind

If schools are one of your top priorities, I always recommend verifying attendance boundaries before writing an offer.

I’ve helped many families narrow their home search based on specific schools, and sometimes a single street can make all the difference.

If you’re thinking about moving to Almaden Valley, I’d be happy to help you understand the neighborhoods, school boundaries, and local market so you can find the home that’s the best fit for your family.
