But there’s another factor that can have just as much impact on your daily life:
Your commute.
A home you absolutely love can feel very different if you’re spending an extra hour in traffic every day. That’s why I always encourage buyers to think about where they’ll be driving—not just where they’ll be living.
Here’s what to consider when choosing a neighborhood based on your commute.
Start With Where You Work
Silicon Valley is spread out, and “working in tech” can mean commuting to a lot of different places.
Many of the area’s largest employers—including Apple, Nvidia, Google, Adobe, and countless startups—are located in cities like Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and Mountain View.
Choosing a neighborhood that’s convenient for your workplace can make a huge difference in your quality of life.
Great Neighborhoods for Northbound Commutes
If you work in Cupertino, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View, you’ll probably want to focus your home search on the western side of San Jose.
Neighborhoods like West San Jose and Cambrian offer convenient access to major highways, making it easier to get to many of Silicon Valley’s largest employers.
Depending on your exact destination, these neighborhoods can help reduce commute times compared to living farther south or east.
Best Neighborhoods for Downtown San Jose
If you work downtown or enjoy using public transportation, several central neighborhoods are worth considering.
Willow Glen, Rose Garden, and Naglee Park are all located close to Downtown San Jose while still offering quiet residential streets and established communities.
They’re also conveniently located near Diridon Station, one of the Bay Area’s major transportation hubs, providing access to Caltrain, Amtrak, ACE, and local transit options.
Public Transportation Can Be a Plus
While most people in San Jose still drive to work, public transportation can be a great option for some commuters.
Neighborhoods like Japantown and areas near Downtown have convenient access to VTA Light Rail and other transit services, making it possible to leave the car at home depending on where you work.
Highway Access Matters
One thing many buyers don’t realize is that two homes can be the same distance from your office but have very different commute times.
Living close to major highways like Highway 85, Highway 87, Interstate 280, or Highway 101 can make your daily drive much easier.
That’s one reason neighborhoods like Cambrian continue to be popular with commuters—they provide convenient access to several major freeways.
Test the Commute Before You Buy
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is simple:
Drive the commute before you make an offer.
Try it during the same time you’d normally leave for work. Traffic in Silicon Valley can change dramatically during rush hour, and seeing it firsthand gives you a much more realistic picture than a map app on a Sunday afternoon.
You may find that a neighborhood just a few miles closer to work saves you hours every week.
Bottom Line
There’s no single “best” neighborhood for commuting in San Jose.
The right choice depends on where you work, how often you’re in the office, whether you drive or use public transportation, and what kind of lifestyle you’re looking for outside of work.
The good news is that San Jose offers a wide variety of neighborhoods, and with the right guidance, it’s possible to find a home that fits both your lifestyle and your commute.
