A Year of Celebration: Annual Events You Won’t Want to Miss in San Jose’s Japantown

One of the things that makes San Jose’s Japantown so special isn’t just its restaurants, shops, or historic charm—it’s the strong sense of community you’ll find throughout the year.

From lively street festivals to weekly farmers markets, there’s almost always something happening that brings neighbors and visitors together. These events celebrate the neighborhood’s rich Japanese American heritage while creating opportunities for everyone to experience the culture, food, music, and traditions that make Japantown one of San Jose’s most unique neighborhoods.

Here are some of the biggest events to add to your calendar.

Nikkei Matsuri

Every spring, Japantown comes alive during Nikkei Matsuri, one of the neighborhood’s most beloved annual traditions.

For one day each April, Jackson Street is transformed into a vibrant festival filled with live entertainment, local artisans, cultural demonstrations, delicious food, and family-friendly activities.

Whether you’re watching traditional performances, browsing handcrafted goods, or enjoying authentic Japanese cuisine, there’s something around every corner to explore.

The festival is organized by the Nikkei Matsuri Foundation, whose mission is to preserve and celebrate Japanese American culture while supporting local students through scholarships and community programs.

Best of all, admission is free, making it a wonderful way to spend a spring day while experiencing the heart of Japantown.

San Jose Obon Festival

If there’s one event that truly captures the spirit of Japantown, it’s the San Jose Obon Festival.

Held each summer at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, Obon is both a cultural celebration and a meaningful tradition honoring ancestors in Japanese Buddhism.

The highlight of the weekend is Bon Odori, a joyful community dance that fills the streets with hundreds—sometimes thousands—of participants dancing together to traditional music.

Don’t worry if you’ve never danced before.

Everyone is welcome to join, and many people learn the dances during free practice sessions held in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Along with the dancing, you’ll find taiko drumming performances, delicious food booths, games, cultural exhibits, and plenty of opportunities to experience one of Northern California’s largest Obon celebrations.

It’s an unforgettable event that brings generations of families together every year.

Japantown Farmers Market

Not every event in Japantown happens once a year.

Every Sunday, the neighborhood hosts a farmers market behind Gordon Biersch Brewery, giving locals and visitors another reason to spend time in the area.

You’ll find fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, specialty foods, flowers, and local vendors, along with a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the morning.

It’s the kind of neighborhood gathering that keeps people coming back week after week.

More Than Festivals—It’s a Community

One of the things that makes Japantown so unique is how connected the community feels.

These events aren’t simply celebrations—they’re traditions that have been bringing people together for generations. Whether you’re attending your first Nikkei Matsuri, joining the Bon Odori dancers during Obon, or picking up fresh produce on a Sunday morning, you’ll quickly discover why so many people love spending time here.

Living in Japantown means these experiences aren’t special occasions you have to drive across town for—they’re part of everyday neighborhood life.

Experience the Heart of Japantown

If you’re thinking about making Japantown your home, the neighborhood offers much more than beautiful historic buildings and incredible restaurants.

It’s a community where culture is celebrated year-round, neighbors know one another, and traditions continue to thrive.

Whether you’re visiting for an afternoon or considering buying a home nearby, there’s always something happening that reminds you why Japantown is one of San Jose’s most treasured neighborhoods.
