There are some Sunday traditions that never get old, and for many San Jose locals, a trip to the Japantown Farmers Market is one of them.
Every Sunday morning, neighbors gather behind Gordon Biersch Brewery to shop for fresh produce, pick up pastries, grab a cup of coffee, and catch up with familiar faces. It’s not the biggest farmers market in the South Bay, but that’s part of what makes it so special. It’s relaxed, friendly, and feels like a true neighborhood gathering.
A Weekly Neighborhood Tradition
The Japantown Farmers Market takes place every Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at 357 E. Taylor Street, behind Gordon Biersch Brewery. If you live in or near Japantown, it’s an easy walk. Even if you’re visiting for the morning, it’s the perfect place to start your day before exploring the neighborhood’s shops, restaurants, and historic streets.
One thing to keep in mind: there isn’t parking at the market itself, so you’ll want to plan on finding street parking nearby. Fortunately, the neighborhood is very walkable, making it easy to park once and enjoy the area.
Fresh Food, Local Vendors, and a Little Bit of Everything
Although the market is on the smaller side, it offers a great variety of local vendors. You’ll typically find seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, locally roasted coffee, and prepared foods that make an easy breakfast or lunch.
Many shoppers come for their weekly produce but end up leaving with a loaf of fresh bread, a pastry, or something new from one of the specialty vendors. It’s one of those places where you never know exactly what you’ll discover, and that’s part of the fun.
A Market with History
The Japantown Farmers Market has been part of the neighborhood for decades and is one of San Jose’s original farmers markets. While it’s smaller than it was years ago, especially now that so many nearby communities have their own markets, it has managed to hold onto the welcoming, small-town feel that longtime residents appreciate.
Visit a few Sundays in a row, and chances are you’ll start recognizing the vendors—and maybe even a few fellow shoppers.
More Than Just Grocery Shopping
One of the best things about the market isn’t what’s for sale—it’s the sense of community.
You’ll see neighbors stopping to chat, families out for a morning walk, and visitors discovering Japantown for the first time. Supporting local farmers and small businesses is a bonus, but it’s the atmosphere that keeps people coming back week after week.
After browsing the market, it’s easy to turn the morning into a neighborhood outing. Grab coffee from a local café, browse the unique shops along Jackson Street, or take a walk through nearby Backesto Park before heading home.
Thinking About Living in Japantown?
Neighborhoods aren’t defined only by their homes—they’re shaped by the everyday experiences that come with living there. Being able to walk to a farmers market on a Sunday morning is one of those little things that makes Japantown such a special place to call home.
If you’re thinking about buying or selling in Japantown, I’d love to help you learn more about the neighborhood and find the right fit for your next move.
